Tips on How to Get into Healthcare

Healthcare can be an attractive market for suppliers, but it rewards preparation. Australia's health system is large, highly regulated and spread across federal, state, territory, local, public, private and not-for-profit organisations. The first step is not sending a campaign – it is understanding exactly which part of the system you are trying to reach.

1. Understand who funds, manages and buys

The Australian Government is responsible for areas including Medicare, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, private health insurance oversight and parts of primary care. State and territory governments manage public hospitals – through local hospital networks such as Local Health Districts in NSW and Hospital and Health Services in Queensland – along with many community, mental health, ambulance and public health services. Primary Health Networks, aged care providers and a large private sector add further layers.

That means the same product can have a different buyer depending on jurisdiction and care setting. Before contacting prospects, map who owns the problem, who controls the budget, who assesses risk and who will use the solution.

2. Don't rely on one 'decision maker'

Healthcare purchasing usually involves several stakeholders. A technology purchase may involve clinical leaders, ICT, cyber security, procurement, finance and an executive sponsor. A facilities product may involve operations, infection control, WHS and procurement. Build campaigns around buying groups rather than a single job title – reaching two or three relevant functions in the same organisation also shows you how purchasing really works.

3. Know your audience and segment properly

'Healthcare' is not one audience. Public hospitals, private hospitals, aged care providers, Primary Health Networks, community services and health agencies have different priorities, and rural and remote settings bring their own pressures. Know who you are writing to, too: women made up 78% of workers in health industries in 2025, so make sure your imagery, language and case studies reflect the people who will actually read them. Segment by organisation type, location, size, service model and job function.

4. Align your offer with current reform priorities

The 2026–2031 National Health Reform Agreement applies from 1 July 2026. The new Aged Care Act and Support at Home program started on 1 November 2025. From 1 July 2026, pathology and diagnostic imaging reports must be shared to My Health Record by default. You don't need to sell a 'health product' to be relevant – health organisations also buy training, software, communications, facilities, security and professional services. The key is explaining the outcome in healthcare terms.

5. Make evidence and compliance part of the pitch

Health buyers are risk-conscious. Be ready with clear information on implementation, security, privacy, support, total cost, references and measurable outcomes. If you use email, make sure campaigns comply with the Spam Act 2003: commercial messages generally need consent, must identify the sender and must include a functional unsubscribe.

6. Keep your prospect data current

Health organisations restructure, merge and rename, and people move roles constantly. A list assembled once and left in a CRM deteriorates quickly. A-ZGovBIZ's researchers verify our health data year-round – every record is contacted at least once a year, subscriber bounce reports are investigated and re-activated, and deliverability sits at a consistent 98.5–99%. Discovery Online lets you search and export current contacts whenever you need them, across 9,417 health contacts from aged care to hospitals and health administration.

Getting into healthcare is less about finding a shortcut and more about understanding the market, identifying the right people and staying relevant to their priorities.
